World Spartan Championship elite athletes arrive in Abu Dhabi tomorrow

The elite athletes participating in the first ever Middle Eastern edition of the World Spartan Championship, organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council in cooperation with the Spartan International Foundation, will arrive in Abu Dhabi tomorrow.

The list of participants in the world championship will be completed with the arrivals from the United States of America and Europe on Thursday. They will then be transported to the event site in the Liwa desert on the same day in advance of the start of the official championship competitions on 3 December.

The organizers revealed the allocation of buses to shuttle participants and spectators from more than one location within the city of Abu Dhabi, in addition to buses from Yas Island and Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The tournament organizers also revealed the readiness of the camps specially prepared to receive the athletes and community members participating in the various categories of the tournament. The completion of these preparations was achieved with cooperation from the concerned government agencies and includes the provision of medical teams and volunteers to assist the participants during the competition stages, in addition to the event village that will host many recreational activities related to Emirati culture.

The World Spartan Championship is being held for the first time outside the United States of America, which comes as a result of its global popularity, especially in the Arab region. The UAE, in particular, has organized and hosted more than one Spartan challenge recently, which attracted the participation of a wide range of individuals from different segments of society.

The championship kicks off on Friday with elite men’s competitions for a distance of 21 km across the sand dunes in the Liwa desert, followed by the elite women’s competitions and community-centred events.

Spartan was founded by the American runner and adventurer Joe de Sina, president of the Spartan International Foundation. It is a series of obstacle races with varying distances, ranging from 3 km to 50 km, in which the most prominent challenges include carrying the Atlantic stone, the barbed wire crawl, fire jump, Hercules crane, over crane challenge, mountain climbing, javelin throw, tire pull, and wall traversal.
