World Immunisation Week reflects importance of vaccines as key element for global preventive healthcare systems: Chairman of Department of Health-Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Hamed, Chairman of Department of Health-Abu Dhabi has emphasised that the COVID-19 pandemic is proof of the key role that vaccines play in protecting communities. Here in the UAE, we’ve witnessed the eminent response to the pandemic under the directives and support of our wise leadership.

In his speech on the occasion of the World Immunisation Week, Al Hamed said that the week reflects the importance of vaccines as a key element for global preventive healthcare systems. Today, the UAE is one of the world’s most vaccinated nations with a low mortality rate since the onset of the pandemic.

Al Hamed added that the Emirate of Abu Dhabi topped rankings of some of the world’s leading cities for its response to the global crisis based on distinguished international classifications and criteria.

The UAE became a role model in harnessing an advanced infrastructure to support global efforts in developing vaccines through participating in clinical trials and leveraging scientific research efforts, reiterating its position as an incubator for life sciences in the region, he added.

He revealed that on the back of our successful global efforts, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi was granted a seat in the World Health Organisation’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation (SAGE), represented by our very own Dr. Farida Al Hosani, Infectious Disease Expert and Executive Director of Infectious Diseases and Official Spokesperson for the UAE Healthcare Sector.

Moreover, Abu Dhabi rolled out a robust system for vaccine transport, storing and distribution through the Hope Consortium. The consortium supported in the distribution of 260 million vaccines to more than 60 countries around the world, consolidating the Emirate’s position as a world-class logistics hub for pharmaceutical products and vaccines, he noted.

Al Hamed indicated that Abu Dhabi has a solid vaccination programme that offers vaccination against several infectious diseases available for all members of the community, including vaccinations for children, travel, Hajj and Umrah, as well as seasonal vaccinations. During World Immunisation Week, I urge all members of our community to benefit from the vaccination programmes to protect their health and others.
