UAE STATEMENT AT THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL MEETING ON UNITED NATIONS INTEGRATED TRANSITION ASSISTANCE MISSION IN SUDAN UNITAMS

Madam President,

I thank the Special Representative, Mr. Volker Perthes, for his comprehensive briefing on recent developments in Sudan, including the latest work of the trilateral mechanism. We also followed the briefing by Ibrahim Mudawi and welcome the participation of Ambassador Al-Harith Mohammed in today’s meeting.

Madam President,

A clear path out of the political impasse has yet to emerge, however despite mounting challenges facing the country, the UAE believes that tangible progress in the country remains possible through intensive support from the international community.

Regarding the updates on the efforts of the trilateral mechanism, including the ongoing engagement with Sudanese stakeholders, we note that the meeting on 8 June demonstrated the importance of holding an inclusive dialogue across all segments of Sudanese society to reach a sustainable agreement. We also note the meeting on 9 June, which aimed to bridge different views, marked both a vital and necessary step towards prioritizing national interest and promoting reason and wisdom to overcome differences in the interests of the people of Sudan.

We also hope that the military component’s announcement regarding its withdrawal from the negotiations sponsored by the trilateral mechanism will help the political forces reach an agreement on the formation of a technocratic Government. To this end, and as we mentioned before, Sudanese ownership over the political process is vital for the success of the transitional process.

As for the difficult economic situation and humanitarian conditions that have been exacerbated by the floods and severe food insecurity, it is important for international donors to consider revising their recent decisions. Doing so could prevent Sudan’s economy from collapse and help with its recovery. The international community must also intensify its support for Sudan to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the impacts of climate. In this context, we offer again our sincere condolences and sympathies to Sudan, its people, and the families of the victims of the devastating floods. We also affirm the UAE’s continued commitment to provide relief assistance through its airbridge, recently launched in support of those affected in Sudan.

As for the security situation,we believe that national mechanisms in Sudan are important for de-escalating tensions, including Sudan’s sponsorship of several local peace agreements in response to clashes between tribes in Western and Southern Darfur. Additionally, while Sudan has received limited support for the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement, significant progress has been made in security arrangements in Darfur, which is reflected, for example, in the efforts of the Permanent Ceasefire Committee and the recent graduation of the first class of Joint Security Keeping Forces. For Sudan to make further progress, the international community must intensify its efforts and provide technical and financial support, so the country can ensure stability throughout Darfur.

In conclusion, the UAE reaffirms its support for the aspirations of the Sudanese people, and we reiterate our respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity.

Thank you, Madam President.
