Non-League Wrexham stunned Championship Coventry City with a thrilling 4-3 victory at the Coventry Building Society Arena to book their place in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Goals from Sam Dalby and Elliot Lee fired the visitors into a shock 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes before Ben Sheaf got one back for the Sky Blues, only for Thomas O’Connor to grab a third just before half-time.
Paul Mullin then put the Welsh outfit 4-1 ahead from the spot before goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Kasey Palmer set up a thrilling finish, but the away side held on for a famous victory.
They will be joined in the draw by fellow National League side Chesterfield, who were denied a shock win over West Bromwich Albion thanks to Brandon Thomas-Asante’s last-gasp equaliser, as the sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw.
It had looked like Armando Dobra was to be the cup hero after he struck twice in five minutes before the break to put the non-League side 3-2 ahead at the break, only for Thomas-Asante to break Spireites hearts at the death.
Thomas-Asante opened the scoring for the Baggies after just two minutes only for the hosts side to respond just five minutes later as Tyrone Williams bundled home Ollie Banks’ header.
Karlan Grant then restored the Championship outfit’s lead with a cool finish just 10 minutes later only for Dobra to strike twice in five minutes before half-time to send the 1997 semi-finalists ahead at the break.
The National League side defied the 66-place gap between the teams for almost all of the second half, only for Thomas-Asante to force a replay at The Hawthorns with a last-minute strike.
Chesterfield remain in the draw alongside fellow National League side Boreham Wood, who earned a 1-1 draw at home to League One’s Accrington Stanley.
Stanley went ahead through Ryan Astley after just six minutes and looked to be heading through to the fourth round only for Lee Ndlovu to equalise 12 minutes from time and send Meadow Park wild.
Elsewhere, Championship strugglers Blackpool upset Premier League club Nottingham Forest with an emphatic 4-1 victory.
Michael Appleton’s Seasiders are without a win in nine games in the league but showed no sign of that form as they blew Forest away with an electric second-half performance.
Marvin Ekpiteta had put the hosts ahead at the break before Ian Poveda, CJ Hamilton, and Jerry Yates all found the net after the restart to send the Blackpool faithful wild, before Ryan Yates grabbed a consolation for Forest.
Championship leaders Burnley also overcame Premier League opposition, as they beat AFC Bournemouth 4-2 on the south coast thanks to two goals each from Manuel Benson and Anass Zaroury.
Benson got the Clarets going after just six minutes only for Ryan Christie to level proceedings shortly after.
But Zaroury scored twice in four minutes as the clock ticked towards half-time to send Vincent Kompany’s side into the break 3-1 to the good.
Dominic Solanke halved the deficit three minutes into the second half before Benson restored the Championship side’s two-goal lead just before the hour to send them safely through.
Newcastle United also fell to lower league opposition, as a Josh Windass double helped Sheffield Wednesday past the Magpies despite Bruno Guimaraes setting up a nervy finish at Hillsborough.
League One Fleetwood Town booked their place in the fourth round for the first time with a 2-1 win over Championship QPR, while League Two Grimsby Town overcame Burton Albion of League One 1-0.
There was no upset in the early kick-off at Priestfield, as Kelechi Iheanacho’s second half effort helped 2021 winners Leicester City past League Two side Gillingham 1-0.
Two injury time strikes from Ross Stewart and Luke O’Nien helped Sunderland avoid a shock defeat to Shrewsbury, after Matthew Pennington had put the League One side ahead with just nine minutes to go.
Harry Kane produced the sole strike of the game to send Tottenham Hotspur past Portsmouth, while World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister marked his return to Brighton & Hove Albion with two goals as the Seagulls beat Middlesbrough 5-1 and Fulham eased past Hull City 2-0.
There was also a big win for Ipswich Town, as the Tractor Boys beat Rotherham 4-1 thanks to a late flurry of goals from Conor Chaplin, Freddie Ladapo and Wes Burns after Conor Washington had cancelled out Cameron Humphreys’ opener.
Preston North End beat fellow Championship side Huddersfield Town 3-1, while Reading beat Watford 2-0 with Sheffield United getting past Millwall by the same score line.
Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers will meet again after the pair played out a 2-2 draw at Anfield, and there will also be a replay between Luton Town and Wigan Athletic after their 1-1 draw.
Southampton came out on top of an all-Premier League affair against Crystal Palace with a 2-1 win and West Ham United beat Brentford 1-0.
