Malaysia: Number of evacuees increases in four flood-affected states

KUALA LUMPUR, The flood situation in several states worsened, as the number of evacuees at relief centres rose to 48,989 on Sunday morning, Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA) reported. Johor continued to record the highest number of evacuees with 44,860 followed by Pahang (2,978), Negeri Sembilan (587), Melaka (493) and Selangor (71). In JOHOR, the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), in a statement, said 13,029 families had been evacuated to 260 relief centres in 10 districts.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today visited flood victims accommodated at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Gemereh temporary relief centre. The floods in Johor have claimed four lives thus far.

nwar previously said that the federal government will channel flood relief amounting to RM50 million to Johor to help flood victims and immediate needs in the state.

The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has spent RM615,000 for the supply of food to be sent to states that are currently affected by floods. Its Minister Nancy Shukri said the food aid is still in the process of being delivered and it is hoped that it will be sufficient to meet the needs of the flood victims. “We have spent RM615,000 for food stocks but are still insufficient because in Johor alone over 40,000 (flood victims) are affected.
