Land of tolerance hosts the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event tomorrow: Hessa Buhumaid

ABU DHABI, The UAE is very proud to host the first Special Olympics World Games ever held in the Middle East from 14th to 21st March, said Hessa Essa Buhumaid, Minister of Community Development.

”The UAE will tomorrow host the humanity on its land of tolerance. The eight-day – the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event – will go beyond the value and venue of international events to express profound respect and appreciation to the people of determination as an important force in the community,” the minister told a pre-event press conference in the attendance of Mary Davis, CEO of Special Olympics, Saif Saeed Gobash, Member of the Higher Committee for Special Olympics, and Ayman Abdul Wahab, Regional President, Special Olympics MENA.

”Olympics Games seek to deliver local and international aspired goals of spreading the values of solidarity, cohesion and unity among individuals, states and nations. It is an important national humanitarian mission and we are proud to take through the Special Olympics. We hope to convey this human message across the work,” she added.

“It’s a great pleasure for us to be here in the Middle East for the first World Games that have been held in this part of the world,” Mary Davis told the media persons.

“I have never seen anything like the preparation that has been put in over the past couple of years into ensuring these games will be the best World Games in the history of the Special Olympics movement.”

The opening ceremony tomorrow will also see the lighting of the cauldron that will officially mark the opening of the World Games when ‘the Flame of Hope’ completes its final journey of the nationwide Law Enforcement Torch Run into the iconic Zayed Sports City stadium.

With Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 set to be the most unified Games in the 50-year history of the Special Olympics movement, People of Determination have played a pivotal role in conceptualizing, organizing, creating and staging the Opening Ceremony and performances. They are the ‘Makers’ who are working hand-in-hand with an international team of technical specialists and performers to make their vision a reality at the Opening Ceremony, which will mark the beginning of the world’s biggest sports and humanitarian event of the year.

The UAE will welcome more than 7,500 athletes from over 190 nations for Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 between 14th and 21st March, 2019. They will compete in 24 officially sanctioned Olympic-style sports in what will be the first World Games to be held in the Middle East.
