Bahrain ranks fourth globally in Global Knowledge Index 2021 for high percentage of researchers in higher education

According to the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) and United Nations Development Program’s (UNDP) Global Knowledge Index 2021, Bahrain has ranked fourth globally for its percentage of researchers in higher education within the education sector. The index ascertains a nation’s level of global knowledge based on their commitment to sustainable development, support for contemporary lifestyles, ability to develop knowledge societies, and capacity to customize future-focused policies.

The index, which was implemented by 154 countries worldwide, contained seven secondary sectoral indices with 155 variables selected from over 40 international databases and sources. The index assessed the performance of six crucial knowledge sectors: pre-university education, technical education and professional training, higher education, information and communications technology (ICT), research development and innovation, and economy. Additionally, it included a secondary variable that highlighted the social, political, economic, health, and environmental context of these sectors.

The results of the Global Knowledge Index 2021 underwent a comprehensive review during the seventh edition of the Knowledge Summit 2022, which was held at Expo 2020 Dubai. Based on the index, Bahrain displayed exceptional performance in terms of knowledge infrastructure and came 55th among 154 countries globally. The index also highlighted key strengths from the results, which included the high percentage of higher education scholars, growth in percentage of internet users, low rates of unemployment, internet access at home for families, and broadband internet subscriptions per smartphone.

According to sectoral indices, Bahrain ranked 30th globally in Information and Communications Technology, 43rd in economy, 68th in pre-university education, 76th in technical education and professional training, 76th in higher education, 91st in enabling environment, and 94th in research development and innovation.
