Souq Al Jubail collaborates with Sharjah Art Foundation to engage children through art

SHARJAH, — Souq Al Jubail, SQAJ, has hosted an art workshop in collaboration with the Sharjah Art Foundation.

The ‘Undersea Sketchbook’ workshop saw children aged 7 and 8 invited to draw various sea creatures. The workshop hoped to develop an understanding of the journey that fishermen take to catch fish and sell them at Souq Al Jubail’s fish auctions. The bright colours and shapes used in the sketchbook greatly engaged the children and helped them internalise the story-like facets of fishing.

Ali Al Suwaidi, Director of Souq Al Jubail, commented, “Through our collaboration with Sharjah Art Foundation, we hope to bring joy to our participants through art. It is important to inculcate the knowledge of fishing in the younger generation so they will be able to understand the provisions of the environment and why they should help sustain it.”

“This collaboration is in-line with Souq Al Jubail’s consistent efforts to improve the Emirate of Sharjah through community engagement. It also provides the participants an opportunity to take a glimpse back on the UAE’s fishing history and traditions through the live traditional fish auction that takes place every day after Al Asr prayer,” Al Suwaidi added.

During the workshop, participants were encouraged to identify various species of fish, learn their features, where they then created drawings and paintings based on their impressions of the species they were tasked to identify in order to compile a personal fish encyclopaedia to take home.
