Aboul Gheit expresses appreciation for role played by FAO in countries experiencing armed conflicts

CAIRO — The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has expressed his appreciation for the role played by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, FAO, in providing food assistance to countries facing humanitarian crises or armed conflicts in Syria, Libya, Yemen and Somalia.

This came during his participation in the 40th session of FAO conference, which is currently being held in Rome, and his meeting with FAO Director-General, Jose Graziano da Silva.

“The meeting dealt with how to work on developing cooperation between the two organisations in terms of food and water security issues,” said Mahmoud Afifi, Spokesman of the Secretary-General.

In a statement distributed by the Arab League today, the Secretary-General also reviewed the most important efforts undertaken by the General Secretariat of the League in this important area, expressing the hope that the coming period will witness the improvement of the size and level of cooperation between the Arab League and FAO in this regard, the spokesman added.

FAO Director-General presented the most important plans, programmes and activities carried out by the organisation in the Arab region, stressing the pivotal coordination with the Arab League, and the organisation’s full commitment to support the secretariat and the Arab countries in areas related to achieving food and water security.
